National Lottery Awards for All – Intergenerational Project
We recently completed our WEPT intergenerational project funded by the National Lottery Awards for All; using the theme of fashion to bring together people from diverse cultural backgrounds aged between 26 – 75 years across the London Borough of Brent at the Catalyst’s Unity Centre in Harlesden. Participants took part in sessions aimed at designing, making and producing fashion garments, suitable for all ages.
We used the existing skills of participants to enhance the learning of others in the group as well as introducing them all to new skills and pastimes. We introduced and helped people gain experience in using the Internet, email programmes and online social media programmes. By sharing experiences between the younger participants to help older people to use technology and the older participants to pass on their life experiences and skills to the younger generation thereby breaking down age barriers. By doing this we enhanced and improved the knowledge and appreciation of the historic, cultural and traditional life of those living within the London Borough of Brent.
The project has been a great success and we also empowered a group of fairly experienced women in collaboration with the Unity Centre, to make garments to be sold in pop-up shops and stalls across the borough. We are therefore, very grateful to the National Lottery for the support and their continued support, and look forward to working with them again soon.
