The Third Anniversary of Grenfell
At WEPT this Sunday June 14, the UK we will unite, reflect and remember in grief for the third anniversary of the Grenfell tragedy. Especially these unprecedented times to mark the date, as communities affected by the fire are unable to get together and mourn the 72 people who lost their lives.
As a community interest group WEPT, we are very delighted to continue to support and work with the women from diverse cultural and religious backgrounds that were affected by the Grenfell tragedy in delivering technical and creative aspect of fashion design and garment construction, health and well-being projects in the community. In working with these group of women at the Curve community centre, we were very privileged and quickly became aware of the challenge and critical that we develop a deeper understanding and empathy, which enabled us to take special care due to the psychological and emotional trauma some of these women have experienced and their desire for industry skills, health and well-being29 June, 2020

COVID-19 Update
COVID-19 is, fundamentally, a human tragedy. These are unprecedented times, and unprecedented times call for unprecedented actions. In addition to real impact on human lives, we’re grappling with an uncertain future and feel it’s vital for us to focus on skills as the fashion sector is not immune.
At WEPT, our mission is to continue to provide fashion skills training to our beneficiaries in the community — and fulfilling this mission is more important now than ever before.
Our advice, therefore, for those interested in Fashion and Clothing, in order to prepare and be able to adapt in the new opportunities that will evolve in the Fashion Industry post Covid-19 and Brexit, it is of critical significance to have right skills for the craft.
As we work remotely from home, we are at the final stages of developing response on how we can best service our participants/learners over the period these measures are in place and beyond; through online – virtual classroom. So, we’re asking our participants/learners to please understand if we are unable communicate at this time.

Mayor of London’s Culture Seed Project
We completed the implementation of The Mayor of London’s Culture Seed funded; Project Fashion Design and Dressmaking at The CURVE in 2019. Delivered free to access creative activities of fashion design and dressmaking that enhanced participant’s quality of life and breakdown cultural, religious and age-related barriers. The project helped new skills training, tackled trauma, increased feelings of isolation and loneliness faced by both young & old within the community of Grenfell.
We at WEPT are really pleased to have secured Culture Seed funding that enabled us to achieved our primary objective by successfully delivering a Community-led fashion project that played a vital role in the cultural make-up of North Kensington especially the Grenfell community by recognizing, celebrating and showcasing local culture and heritage, making the most of diversity and talent and encouraged people from a range of backgrounds to participate, especially those who face barriers to engaging in the arts.

National Lottery Awards for All – Intergenerational Project
We recently completed our WEPT intergenerational project funded by the National Lottery Awards for All; using the theme of fashion to bring together people from diverse cultural backgrounds aged between 26 – 75 years across the London Borough of Brent at the Catalyst’s Unity Centre in Harlesden. Participants took part in sessions aimed at designing, making and producing fashion garments, suitable for all ages.
We used the existing skills of participants to enhance the learning of others in the group as well as introducing them all to new skills and pastimes. We introduced and helped people gain experience in using the Internet, email programmes and online social media programmes. By sharing experiences between the younger participants to help older people to use technology and the older participants to pass on their life experiences and skills to the younger generation thereby breaking down age barriers. By doing this we enhanced and improved the knowledge and appreciation of the historic, cultural and traditional life of those living within the London Borough of Brent.
The project has been a great success and we also empowered a group of fairly experienced women in collaboration with the Unity Centre, to make garments to be sold in pop-up shops and stalls across the borough. We are therefore, very grateful to the National Lottery for the support and their continued support, and look forward to working with them again soon.

ZOBIA AND VANESS M’BOGE AND WEPT PROJECT
This project is a collaboration between WEPT a CIC and two fashion brands company; Zobia and Vaness M’Boge as part of their giving back to the community in Wembley and co sponsored by The Kindness Offensive charity in the Brent area. Most of the senior citizens had little to no experience with sewing, but had a burning desire to learn more about garment making. The 12-week program is one of the projects with Outreach, to work with local young people, schools and families to inform them of the opportunities in the creative industries.
This pilot project is in respond to a group of local senior citizens who are essentially neglected in the local community and wanted to learn about the sewing and garment making. Over 12 weeks (for 4 hours a week) they worked with two designers Vaness M’Boge of Vaness M’boge womenswear brand and Susan Lake a London College of Fashion graduate, to study a range of specialist skills in fashion, dressmaking, pattern cutting, fabric manipulation, cushions/soft furnishings and other craft pieces of their choice.
Most of these seniors had little to no sewing skills, but by the end of the project they would’ve chosen a commercial pattern and make their own dresses. At the end of the project in July, during the up coming Wembley Futures festival, these seniors will be showcasing their dresses they made at an award ceremony organized for their efforts, and also we’ll be helping them out with additional classes if they want to take it further.
So watch this space!
